Flu Bug

Ugh, I cannot wait to see brown poop again. Ever been through that? The past couple days Colton has been sick. First it was green poop, now yellow. Yuck. His throw up is pink? Ya.

Last night he was up, so we didn't get much sleep in the house. I heard this sort of thing has been going around. To make matters worse, the hubby will be out of town until next week. So my weekend will be filled with poop, throw up, and no sleep.

Do You Always Order The SAME THING..?

Do you always order the same thing when you go to certain restaraunts? I do. I was just thinking about this today while I was eating a Turkey Bacon Ranch sandwhich from Arbys. If I go to a "regular" restaurant of mine, I am always scared to venture off and try something different from my norm. Sounds silly, but I LOVE food. I would be very dissappointed if I ordered something and didn't like it. It actually might ruin my day. Very rarely, I try something new and like it better than my usual.

Cupcakes Gourmet

When these cupcakes arrived at my door, I had to take a picture right away or I would have had to take a photo of an empty box! As you can imagine, these were devoured the very same day they arrived. I cannot tell you the last time I have had cupcakes before this. We don't have any cupcake shops where I am from...maybe that's a good thing because I would be tempted to stop in weekly. These cupcakes from Cupcakes Gourmet were shipped quickly and arrived looking delicious. This is the Cafe Collection: Madagascar bourbon vanilla cake with a light espresso buttercream frosting, dark chocolate cake with mint buttercream dipped in dark chocolate ganache, and peanut butter are the highlights. To tell you the truth, I didn't think the espresso flavoring would be a tasty flavor for a cupcake, but dang, it hit the spot. The espresso flavor was subtle, but still gave me the coffee house feeling. My favorite was the Chocolate/Mint cupcake. I know many are addicted to Girl Scouts' Thin Mint cookies. Well, this is Thin Mints times 100!

I love the story of Cupcakes Gourmet, because it was started by Busy Mom's like us. The story makes me want to put on my apron and whip up a batch of cupcakes and decorate them all pretty, but of course they wouldn't be nearly as yummy (or pretty) as Cupcakes Gourmet.

life. Fittingly enough, the company has its roots in celebration.
In early
2006, Maki’s daughter Chloe was born. The first two weeks of Chloe’s life were
uncertain and fraught with major health concerns; doctors suspected she had a
rare eye cancer. Miraculously, Chloe’s eye cleared up, and turned out to be
perfectly healthy. In celebration of that miracle, Maki marked Chloe’s first
birthday with a party, baking over 100 cupcakes for the occasion. The beautiful
and delicious cupcakes were such a hit that Maki began thinking about opening a
cupcake business. Soon after, Maki’s close friend Heather was asked to provide
food for a large church event. Heather decided to make cupcakes and enlisted
Maki’s help to design them. The two of them enjoyed their creative collaboration
so much that they decided to forge a partnership.

Five Tips to Recession Proof Your Marriage....

My husband and I will be married for 15 years this November. Time flies. A house with a picket fence, 3 kids, a dog - everything I have always wanted. We have been through a lot, sicknesses and deaths of loved ones, September 11 (he worked at the Financial Center), a few years ago a lay off (after 10 years at a company), and now the uncertainty of the market (he’s a NASDAQ trader). Every time you think you have it all under control and you are moving forward – something happens – this time RECESSION.

Kit Yarrow, a consumer psychologist and professor of psychology and business at Golden Gate University in San Franscisco, offers these five tips to help couples recession-proof their relationships.

Tip 1: EXPAND MEANING OF WEALTH - Expand your definition of "wealth" and "security" to include all of your riches -- good health, hobbies, pets, friendships and, most importantly, your spouse and family. Couples have to realize what's really important to them, thinking about all the riches in their life besides money. If people are conscious of this and show appreciation of the other person in their relationship, and other members of their family, it takes away some of sting of what they have to give up when financial circumstances limit them.

Tip 2: CONSIDER NEW ROLES - Flexibility in the face of change is the best defense. Uncover the secret psychological expectations you have about what a "husband" or "wife" should be and consider expanding those concepts to meet new economic realities.

Tip 3: CREATE A ROUTINE - In times of uncertainty, it helps to create as much predictability in you life as you can -- scheduling the good (and the uncomfortable) does just that. Set up weekly budget meetings that includes not only talking about finances, but also the best ways to handle anxiety, feelings and your marriage. Also schedule weekly meetings of a more romantic nature to keep the emotional aspects of your relationship strong.

Tip 4: MIND THE GAP - Be aware that stress and anxiety deplete emotional resources of every kind -- everyone has a little less resilience right now, and everyone needs a little more support. That gap can be the start of misunderstandings that can mushroom into real conflicts. Don't jump to conclusions; focus more on your spouse and less on yourself.

Tip 5 – DO THE DOABLE - Focus on what you can do, and avoid panic around what you can't do. Remember, fear is just a warning bell -- worrying does not solve problems, it short-circuits rational thinking. Be mindful and stay in the present. Reach out for help, and also help others -- it's empowering.

Couples have to understand that the economy is beyond their control, and instead get really focused on things you can control. It's the anxiety over things you can't control that causes marital problems. So make up your mind that worrying doesn't help, or makes things work any better. Some people feel like worrying is doing something, and feel like its wrong to have fun, but it's a mistaken notion that you have to be serious because you're going through serious times. Remember to control what you can control, and let go of what can't. You have to have great empathy for your spouse, and you have to have it for yourself. Marshal all of your resources to support and assist -- our ability to give to each other is a source of salvation.

Waffles on the go

Americans can now enjoy the taste and comfort of a delicious homemade breakfast of waffle and eggs, even when they’re hard at work or on-the-go. Dunkin' Donuts, America’s favorite all-day, everyday stop for coffee and baked goods, introduced its new Waffle Breakfast Sandwich on February 4th, a sweet and savory, Oven-Toasted sandwich featuring cherrywood smoked bacon, scrambled eggs and American cheese between two maple-infused waffles. Dunkin’ Donuts is now the first national quick service restaurant chain to serve a breakfast sandwich featuring waffles. The Waffle Breakfast Sandwich is available through March 17 at participating Dunkin’ Donuts shops throughout the country and has a suggested retail price of $2.99.

I can't even begin to tell you how delicious this sandwich was. I knew that it was a waffle sandwich and now this may seem silly, but when I was handed my sandwich I thought it would be dry since I wasn't given any type of syrup to put on my waffle sandwich. I bravely took a bite of my sandwich and was pleasantly surprised to taste the Maple that was put into the waffle without making it a sticky mess. The cherrywood smoked bacon is a great addition to the sandwich. All the flavors combined made it an incredibly enjoyable breakfast sandwich. Just describing it makes me want to ask the hubby to get that for dinner for us...of course, he just got home and I doubt I can convince him to get it tonight, but I'm thinking the little guy and I might just be making a visit to Dunkin' Donuts for breakfast tomorrow.

Babies = confusion

Is it just me or when I signed up to become a parent I did not envision me losing my mind? The fuzzy memory started early in my pregnancy, I had sticky notes all over my office (I quit my job two weeks before my son was born.) so that I wouldn't forget anything. Then the little man came into the world and, of course, with the lack of sleep I can understand why I wandered around in a fog for the first 6 months of my son's life. Slowly my memory started coming back to me, but I don't think I really fully recovered until my son was sleeping through the night at 14 months. All of sudden my little baby was becoming a toddler...and he brought all the joys of toddlerhood like curiosity and attitude. With this new found toddlerhood, I found my baby now hiding things like his cup, his stuffed puppy, crayons and things of mine like my cell phone, keys, and other various things I would need through the day in the most random places like the garage (by putting the stuff through the cat door), behind the satellite box in our entertainment system, or putting stuff in the laundry hamper. I don't know about anyone else, but it makes me want to cry when I can't figure out if misplaced something or if my son decided to hide it for me like my debit card he took off the computer desk in the two seconds that I got up to answer a phone call. I'm sure I've got a few more years of this confusion left since my little man is only 22 months old. I don't even want to think about a sibling in the future...not yet anyway maybe in a year the thought won't horrify me too bad.

Baseball Season Has Arrived

Baseball season has arrived in the Roemmich household. I have been with TJ for 5 baseball seasons and the 6th is about to start. I first started dating him, the summer after his sophomore year in highschool. It is a big deal for him because he is hoping to continue playing after college. It is a big deal for me too, as you can imagine, because of the time commitment. I do LOVE baseball, but the travel and time put into it, sometimes overshadows the pluses.

Well, their first series is this weekend in Texas. They have to go to the warm states first, because in Omaha, obviously it would be too cold to play. (It's supposed to get to 9 degrees tonight). I wish I could go to one of the away series in a warm state, but of course we can't spend $1,000 for a plane ticket and hotel room! They travel to Phoenix next weekend and Myrtle Beach the next. Ohh how I would like to lay by the beach right now. Since I can't go, I will have to resort to watching a live animated version on the computer. Its actually pretty cool, and tells you everything that is happening in the game. (ie, pitch count, outs, players positions, etc.) They sometimes have them on the radio which is nice too.

Two years ago they went pretty far, were the Missouri Valley Champs and went on to regionals. They played a few games on national television, which was awesome and hopefully they make it this year!

In this economy, DIY is making a comeback!

My Husband Baked Cookies?!

A miracle happened in my house last night. When TJ got home I told him I wasn't feeling well and he let me take an hour nap. When I woke up, I walked into the kitchen and smelled cookies. I really didn't know what was happening, I was stunned. Then he opened the oven and there they were. I actually screamed, "What?!" because I was so taken by surprise. He has never baked anything the 6 years I have known him. So you can imagine my reaction.

AND he told me he was making dinner. On the menu was pork chops and twice baked potatoes....kind of. I jumped at the chance to take a picture. He tried to take JUST the skin off of the potatoes without leaving a little around the sides, kind of like a boat. I guess he thought the thin skin would be able to hold up. He gave up after that and just smushed it all together. I was trying to contain my laughter, but couldn't hold it in when he scooped piles of smushed potato on a baking pan.

The pork chops were pink, the potatoes were actually pretty good and the cookies were delicious! I hope this isn't just a one time thing. I could get used to it :)
